Gentle Carousel Therapy Horses in Newtown, CT
Following the tragic shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the community has reached out to Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses to help heal its heartache. Tiny hero therapy horse Magic and her friends traveled from Florida after a request was made by the people of Newtown that they wanted their children to “talk about minis and not monsters” when they came home from school. The visit with the animals marked the first time since the terrible events that the children were seen smiling and heard laughing in the school. “The town is amazing, it really is a special place,” said Debbie Garcia-Bengochea, at Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses. “It’s heart warming to see the children with the horses, smiling and happy. I asked one why she liked the horses so much and she replied that they don’t tell your secrets.” Magic met with the family of six-year-old animal lover and equestrian Catherine Hubbard, who was lost in the tragedy and, with Catherine’s parents’ blessing, a pony has been named Catherine her memory. The filly, born during Hurricane Debby in 2012, will be trained to work with children in school and hospital programs. She will wear a pink therapy vest and halter, Hubbard’s favorite color. The trip was made financially possible by the people of Newtown and others around the world including school children from as far away as South Africa, UK and Australia.
